What is Walking Football?
Walking football is a fun, inclusive, and engaging version of the beautiful game designed for people of all ages and fitness levels, especially those who might have thought their footballing days were over.
How is it different from traditional football?
Originating in the UK, it retains the essence of traditional football but with skills like passing accurately, movement off the ball and strategy being prioritised over pace.
This simple change makes it accessible for older players or individuals recovering from injuries, as it reduces the risk of injuries typically associated with the faster-paced version of the game.
For those who are still involved in playing traditional 11 a side, it also improves positional awareness and passing skills significantly.
The social, physical and mental health benefits of football
One of the major appeals of walking football is its ability to foster camaraderie and community spirit. Teams are often made up of players from diverse backgrounds, all united by a shared love for the sport and the desire to stay active.
The slower pace allows for enhanced strategic play and ensures everyone can contribute meaningfully, regardless of their physical condition.
Playing walking football is a fantastic way to improve your fitness, as it provides a cardiovascular workout while being gentle on the joints. It also helps in enhancing balance, coordination, and mental sharpness. Beyond the physical benefits, the social aspects of the game help combat loneliness and promote mental well-being, making it a holistic activity for both body and mind.
Whether you’re looking to relive your footballing glory days, try something new, or simply enjoy a good laugh with friends, walking football offers a refreshing and enjoyable experience.
So lace up your trainers, come along on a Thursday evening, and get ready to rediscover the joy of football at a pace that suits you.
Who is Walking Football aimed at?
Our Walking Football team is relatively newly established and aimed at the older end of our current football squad – typically players are aged between 45 and 60.
We started this to encourage our long-term players to continue to play regularly and also as it provides a pathway into continued competitive play.
Most of our players also play in our Sunday kickabout sessions and also in some 5 a side and 11 a side team matches.
If you are looking for some form of football to continue playing beyond 45 – we have something for you.
